How should Man Utd line up without Luke Shaw?

The loss of Luke Shaw could hardly have come at a worse time for Manchester United. The England full-back's broken leg has brought his run of excellent form this season to a shuddering halt and simultaneously leaves Louis van Gaal scratching his head over the best way to replace the 20-year-old.

On Friday, the Dutchman insisted that he has plenty of options in terms of cover, with Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ashley Young all being mentioned as potential replacements at left-back. But how else could United remodel their line-up to cope in the absence of Shaw?

Goal looks at some of the alternatives available to Van Gaal..
After the hammer blow of Shaw's departure on Tuesday night, Van Gaal immediately beckoned over Rojo to replace his stricken, first-choice left-back. But as the Argentine ran on it was clear from his signals to Daley Blind that it was at centre-half rather than full-back that the substitute would be deployed.

In truth, United struggled with the arrangement, as PSV found fortune down their right, and it came as no surprise when Luciano Narsingh ghosted into space down the same channel to net the winner for the Dutch side. However, it was obviously in difficult circumstances that Rojo stepped in for the first time this season, while Blind himself has not started at left-back since the home defeat to West Brom in May, so he, himself, will have been rusty. .
