Borussia Dortmund stretched their winning start in the Bundesliga to five games by defeating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 on Sunday to reclaim top spot on goal difference. It extended their run of victories in all competitions under new coach Thomas Tuchel to 11, a club record.
They responded to the gauntlet thrown down by Bayern Munich, who had moved back above Dortmund on Saturday by beating Darmstadt 3-0 for their fifth victory of the league campaign, with a dominant display.
“We knew we needed a top performance today and we oozed precision,” Tuchel said. “We are getting regular confirmation that we have real competitors in the team. We should not spare any thoughts about what our limits could be.”
Dortmund made light of the absence of the attacking midfielder Marco Reus, who was on the bench after recovering from a fractured toe, and were ahead in the 19th minute. Shinji Kagawa picked out Jonas Hofmann with a 50-yard pass and the forward slotted home after the Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno had made an ill-judged advance from his line.
Despite looking tired after their midweek 4-1 Champions League win over BATE Borisov, Leverkusen went close to equalising just after the break but Javier Hernández’s close-range effort was blocked by Roman Buerki.
Dortmund responded by doubling their lead through Kagawa. The former Manchester United player, who has been in sparkling form, finished off a quick passing move in the 58th minute after being set up by Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
With 17 minutes left Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed the scoring with his third successful penalty in two league games after Matthias Ginter had been fouled by Wendell, who was booked. It took Aubameyang’s goal tally to six and 10 in all competitions.
